Killip classification

Pronunciation: KIL-lip

A clinical severity grading system for acute myocardial infarction patients based on physical examination findings and hemodynamic status.

Full Definition

The Killip classification is a four-tier prognostic system developed to stratify risk in acute myocardial infarction patients. Class I indicates no heart failure signs, Class II shows mild heart failure with rales or S3 gallop, Class III represents frank pulmonary edema, and Class IV indicates cardiogenic shock. This classification helps emergency clinicians rapidly assess severity and guide treatment intensity. Higher Killip classes correlate with increased mortality and need for aggressive intervention.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the class number (I-IV) when documenting Killip classification.

In Context

  • "The patient presented with Killip Class III findings, requiring immediate diuretic therapy and consideration of mechanical ventilation." — Emergency department assessment
