A cardiac arrest rhythm where organized electrical activity is present on ECG but produces no detectable pulse or blood pressure.

Full Definition

Pulseless electrical activity (PEA) is a form of cardiac arrest characterized by organized electrical activity on the electrocardiogram without a palpable pulse or measurable blood pressure. Unlike ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, PEA is not shockable and requires identification and treatment of reversible causes. Common causes include hypovolemia, hypoxia, acidosis, electrolyte abnormalities, tension pneumothorax, cardiac tamponade, and massive pulmonary embolism. Treatment focuses on high-quality CPR and addressing underlying precipitating factors.
