torsades de pointes

Pronunciation: tor-SAHD duh PWAHNT

Polymorphic ventricular tachycardia with characteristic twisting QRS pattern.

Full Definition

Torsades de pointes is a specific type of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia characterized by QRS complexes that appear to twist around the ECG baseline. This arrhythmia typically occurs in the setting of prolonged QT interval and can be triggered by electrolyte abnormalities, medications, or congenital long QT syndrome. Torsades can be self-terminating but may degenerate into ventricular fibrillation. Treatment involves magnesium sulfate, correction of electrolyte imbalances, and removal of offending agents. The name means 'twisting of the points' in French.
