Full Definition
Bowel obstruction occurs when there is a mechanical or functional blockage preventing the normal flow of intestinal contents. Mechanical obstructions can be caused by adhesions, hernias, tumors, or foreign bodies, while functional obstructions (ileus) result from impaired motility. Small bowel obstructions are more likely to require emergency surgery than large bowel obstructions. Clinical presentation includes cramping abdominal pain, vomiting, distension, and inability to pass gas or stool.
