A surgical procedure involving the systematic removal of necrotic, devitalized, or heavily contaminated tissue from wounds or surgical sites. In emergency surgery, operative debridement is often performed for traumatic wounds, necrotizing soft tissue infections, or abdominal contamination. The procedure may require multiple staged operations and can range from limited debridement to extensive tissue excision depending on the extent of involvement.
