Full Definition
Traumatic injury where an object or projectile penetrates the abdominal wall, creating risk for intra-abdominal organ damage, hemorrhage, and contamination. Management depends on the mechanism, trajectory, and hemodynamic stability of the patient. Stable patients may undergo CT imaging or diagnostic laparoscopy, while unstable patients require immediate exploratory surgery. Penetrating injuries carry high risk for delayed complications including missed injuries and infection.
