uterine rupture

Complete separation of the uterine wall layers, typically occurring during labor, requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Full Definition

Uterine rupture is a catastrophic obstetric emergency involving complete disruption of all uterine layers, including the serosa, allowing communication between the uterine cavity and peritoneal space. Risk factors include previous cesarean delivery, uterine overdistention, obstructed labor, and inappropriate use of uterotonics. Clinical presentation may include sudden severe abdominal pain, loss of fetal heart rate, maternal hemodynamic instability, and cessation of labor contractions. Emergency management requires immediate delivery via cesarean section, surgical repair or hysterectomy, and aggressive resuscitation for maternal hemorrhagic shock.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between complete rupture and partial dehiscence in documentation.
