Full Definition

Autotransplantation in endocrine surgery refers to the surgical removal of parathyroid tissue followed by immediate reimplantation into a different anatomical location within the same patient. This technique is commonly used during total parathyroidectomy for treating multigland hyperparathyroidism, where a small portion of the least abnormal parathyroid gland is implanted into the forearm muscle or sternocleidomastoid muscle. The goal is to maintain some parathyroid function while treating hyperparathyroidism, with the transplanted tissue accessible for future removal if recurrent disease develops.
