Autoimmune disorder causing hyperthyroidism through thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins that mimic TSH action.

Full Definition

Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, characterized by the production of thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI) that bind to and activate thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptors. This results in thyroid enlargement, excessive hormone production, and characteristic clinical features including exophthalmos, pretibial myxedema, and goiter. The condition predominantly affects women and may require surgical intervention when medical management fails or in cases of severe ophthalmopathy. Named after Irish physician Robert Graves, the disease represents a classic example of molecular mimicry in autoimmune pathology.
