intrathyroidal parathyroid

Full Definition

An anatomical variant where parathyroid tissue is embedded within the thyroid gland itself rather than being located on its surface or in the surrounding tissues. This condition can occur with normal parathyroid glands or with parathyroid adenomas and presents significant challenges during surgery because the parathyroid tissue may not be visible during standard exploration. Intrathyroidal parathyroid glands may require thyroid lobectomy for removal and can be a cause of persistent hyperparathyroidism if not identified during initial surgery.
