Full Definition

Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) is a focused surgical technique for removing solitary parathyroid adenomas through small cervical incisions, typically 2-3 cm in length. This approach relies heavily on preoperative imaging localization and intraoperative parathyroid hormone (iPTH) monitoring to confirm successful removal of hyperfunctioning tissue. Unlike traditional bilateral neck exploration, MIP offers reduced operative time, smaller scars, and faster recovery while maintaining excellent cure rates. The procedure is contraindicated in cases of multigland disease or when preoperative localization is inconclusive.
