Full Definition
A surgical technique used to preserve parathyroid function when parathyroid glands are inadvertently removed or devascularized during thyroid surgery. The parathyroid tissue is minced into small fragments and implanted into a well-vascularized muscle, typically the sternocleidomastoid or forearm brachioradialis muscle. This procedure aims to prevent permanent hypoparathyroidism by allowing the transplanted tissue to establish blood supply and maintain calcium homeostasis.
