The radiotracer accumulates in metabolically active tissue, with abnormal parathyroid glands showing delayed washout compared to normal thyroid tissue. This dual-phase imaging protocol is essential for preoperative planning in parathyroid surgery, helping surgeons identify single-gland disease and plan minimally invasive approaches.
