The thyroid bed refers to the anatomical space that was previously occupied by the thyroid gland following total thyroidectomy. This area is bounded by the strap muscles anteriorly, the carotid sheaths laterally, the trachea and esophagus medially, and extends from the hyoid bone superiorly to the thoracic inlet inferiorly. Post-operatively, the thyroid bed is monitored for potential complications including hematoma formation and, in cancer cases, for local recurrence. Residual thyroid tissue in the thyroid bed can be a source of persistent disease or recurrent hyperthyroidism. Imaging studies often reference the thyroid bed when evaluating post-surgical anatomy.
