A group of inflammatory conditions affecting the thyroid gland with diverse etiologies including autoimmune disorders (Hashimoto's, Graves'), infections (bacterial, viral), medications, or radiation. Some forms cause transient thyrotoxicosis followed by hypothyroidism, while others lead to permanent thyroid dysfunction.
