Danger Zone

The thin concave inner wall of a curved root canal, typically the furcal surface of mesial molar roots, at greatest risk of strip perforation during instrumentation.

Full Definition

The danger zone is an anatomically defined region of the root canal wall—specifically the concave, furcation-facing aspect of the inner curvature in curved canals (most commonly the mesial roots of mandibular molars)—where the dentine is thinnest and the risk of iatrogenic perforation is highest during canal enlargement. Awareness of the danger zone guides instrument selection and shaping strategy to avoid strip perforation. Editors working on operative technique descriptions or complication reports should treat 'danger zone' as a recognised anatomical-clinical term and retain it with its accepted lowercase convention; it is not jargon requiring a substitute. It should be distinguished from the broader concept of canal transportation.
