Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation

An irrigation activation technique in which an ultrasonically energised file or wire agitates irrigant within the root canal without engaging the canal walls.

Full Definition

Passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) enhances the debridement efficacy of endodontic irrigants by using a thin, smooth wire or file oscillating at ultrasonic frequency to create acoustic streaming and cavitation within the irrigant. The term 'passive' distinguishes this technique from active (cutting) ultrasonic instrumentation. PUI is particularly useful for removing the smear layer, dislodging debris from irregularities, and activating calcium hydroxide removal. Editors must note that 'passive ultrasonic irrigation' should not be abbreviated to 'ultrasonic irrigation' alone, as this omits the critical distinction. It is frequently confused with sonic irrigation, which operates at a lower frequency range.

Usage

Usage note: Do not shorten to 'ultrasonic irrigation' in formal clinical writing; the 'passive' qualifier is a technically significant descriptor. Distinguish from sonic activation systems (e.g., EndoActivator).
