Rotary Instrumentation

A method of root canal preparation using engine-driven, continuously rotating nickel-titanium files to shape and clean the canal.

Rotary instrumentation refers to the use of motor-driven nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments that rotate continuously to cut and shape the root canal preparation, as opposed to manual stainless-steel files used in hand instrumentation. NiTi alloys provide superior flexibility and cutting efficiency, making rotary systems particularly advantageous in curved or complex canal anatomies. Numerous proprietary systems exist (e.g., ProTaper, WaveOne, Reciproc), and clinical notes often reference brand names. Editors must render brand names with correct capitalisation and not substitute generic terms unless the study is specifically comparing branded systems. 'Rotary instrumentation' and 'reciprocating instrumentation' are not synonymous, as reciprocation involves a back-and-forth motion rather than continuous rotation.
