Warm Vertical Compaction

A thermoplastic obturation method in which heat-softened gutta-percha is compacted vertically within the root canal system to achieve a dense, three-dimensional fill.

Full Definition

Warm vertical compaction (WVC), popularised by Herbert Schilder in 1967, involves the sequential application of heated pluggers and manual condensers to soften and condense gutta-percha apically and laterally throughout the root canal system. The technique aims to fill accessory canals, fins, and isthmuses that cold lateral compaction may miss. It requires the use of a carrier (plugger) calibrated to bind 3–5 mm short of working length. Editors should verify that the specific heat source (e.g., System B heat carrier, Touch'n Heat) is named in the methods section, as this is a reportable variable; the technique name itself is always rendered 'warm vertical compaction', not 'warm lateral compaction', which is a distinct method.

Usage note: Do not conflate with 'warm lateral compaction', which uses heat but compacts laterally. Always specify the heat delivery device in methods descriptions.
