An epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) is a specialized inpatient facility where patients undergo continuous video-electroencephalography monitoring for several days. The primary purposes include differentiating epileptic seizures from non-epileptic events, localizing seizure onset zones for surgical planning, and characterizing seizure types for optimal treatment selection. Patients are often admitted for medication withdrawal to provoke seizures in a controlled environment. EMUs are staffed by specialized nurses and monitored by epileptologists who can respond immediately to seizure emergencies.
