Focal seizure

Seizure originating from a localized brain region.

Full Definition

Focal seizures, previously termed partial seizures, arise from a specific cortical area and may remain localized or spread to other brain regions. The 2017 ILAE classification system emphasizes focal seizures can occur with or without impaired awareness, replacing the older simple/complex partial seizure terminology. Editors must recognize this updated classification system and ensure consistent use of current terminology in epilepsy literature and patient documentation.

Usage

Usage note: Current preferred terminology over 'partial seizure' per 2017 ILAE classification.
