Seizure cluster

Multiple seizures occurring within a defined time period, typically 24 hours, with return to baseline between events.

Full Definition

Seizure clusters, also known as acute repetitive seizures, refer to an increased frequency of seizures occurring over a short time frame, usually within 24 hours, with the patient returning to their baseline neurological state between individual seizures. This pattern differs from status epilepticus, where continuous seizure activity or incomplete recovery occurs. Seizure clusters can be a sign of breakthrough seizure activity, medication non-compliance, illness, or changes in seizure threshold. Recognition and appropriate management of seizure clusters is important to prevent progression to status epilepticus.
