Full Definition

EMG biofeedback utilizes surface electrodes to detect muscle electrical activity and convert it into visual or auditory feedback that patients can use to modify muscle function. This technique is particularly valuable in rehabilitation for muscle re-education following neurological injury, surgical procedures, or prolonged immobilization. The real-time feedback helps patients learn to activate weak muscles, reduce excessive muscle tension, or coordinate muscle timing patterns. EMG biofeedback protocols must specify electrode placement, target muscle groups, feedback parameters, and training objectives to ensure reproducible treatment outcomes and proper documentation for reimbursement purposes.
