Exercise Modification

Adjustments made to exercise parameters or techniques to accommodate individual limitations, safety concerns, or progression needs.

Full Definition

Exercise modification involves systematic changes to exercise variables such as intensity, duration, frequency, range of motion, or technique to meet individual patient needs and capabilities. Modifications may be temporary accommodations for acute conditions or permanent adaptations for chronic limitations. Common modifications include reducing resistance, limiting range of motion, changing body positions, or substituting equipment. Effective modification requires clinical reasoning to maintain therapeutic benefit while ensuring patient safety and adherence to the rehabilitation program.

Usage

Usage note: Always document the rationale for exercise modifications in clinical notes.
