Metabolic Equivalent

Also written as: MET — Metabolic Equivalent

A unit measuring the energy cost of physical activities, where one MET equals the resting metabolic rate.

Full Definition

A Metabolic Equivalent (MET) is a physiological measure expressing the energy cost of physical activities as multiples of the resting metabolic rate. One MET is defined as the amount of oxygen consumed while sitting at rest, approximately 3.5 mL O2/kg/min. Exercise rehabilitation professionals use MET values to quantify exercise intensity, prescribe appropriate activity levels, and monitor patient progress. Activities are classified as light (1.5-3 METs), moderate (3-6 METs), or vigorous (>6 METs) intensity based on their MET requirements.

Usage

Usage note: Always use MET as the abbreviation; plural is METs.

In Context

  • "The patient's current exercise capacity allows for activities up to 4 METs without symptoms." — Assessment report
  • "Household activities ranging from 2-5 METs were incorporated into the home program." — Discharge summary
