range of motion

Also written as: ROM — range of motion

The extent of movement possible at a joint, measured in degrees and categorized as active or passive.

Full Definition

Range of motion (ROM) refers to the amount of movement available at a joint, typically measured in degrees using a goniometer. Active ROM involves patient-generated movement, while passive ROM is achieved through external assistance. In exercise rehabilitation, ROM limitations are addressed through stretching, mobilization, and progressive movement exercises. Normal ROM values are joint-specific and age-dependent, with deficits indicating need for targeted intervention.

Usage note: Lowercase when spelled out; use ROM abbreviation for brevity
