Submaximal Testing

Exercise testing protocols that assess cardiovascular and functional capacity without pushing patients to their maximum physiological limits.

Full Definition

Submaximal testing involves exercise assessment protocols designed to evaluate patient capacity while maintaining exercise intensity below maximum effort levels. These tests are safer for patients with cardiovascular conditions, orthopedic limitations, or other health concerns that contraindicate maximal exertion. Common submaximal tests include the 6-minute walk test, step tests, and cycle ergometer protocols that use heart rate or perceived exertion as endpoints. Results help establish baseline fitness levels and guide exercise prescription parameters.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate sub-max when used as an abbreviation.
