amniotic band syndrome

Congenital disorder caused by fibrous bands that constrict fetal parts, leading to amputations, limb defects, or facial clefts.

Full Definition

A sporadic congenital disorder resulting from rupture of the amnion with subsequent formation of fibrous bands that can wrap around and constrict developing fetal structures. The condition can cause a spectrum of defects including limb amputations, constriction rings, syndactyly, and facial clefts depending on which structures become entrapped by the bands. The severity depends on the timing of amnion rupture and the extent of band formation. Prenatal diagnosis is possible through detailed ultrasound examination, and in some cases, fetoscopic band lysis may be considered for severe cases with potential for salvage of function.

Usage

Usage note: Sometimes abbreviated as ABS; ADAM stands for Amniotic Deformity, Adhesions, Mutilations.
