estimated fetal weight

Calculated prediction of fetal weight based on ultrasound biometric measurements, used to assess fetal growth and plan delivery.

Full Definition

Estimated fetal weight (EFW) is a calculated prediction of fetal weight derived from ultrasound biometric measurements including biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. Various formulas, such as those developed by Hadlock, Shepard, or Campbell, are used to calculate EFW with accuracy typically within 10-20% of actual birth weight. EFW is essential for identifying fetal growth restriction, macrosomia, and planning delivery management. Serial measurements track fetal growth velocity and help identify concerning growth patterns that may require intervention or closer monitoring.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify which formula was used for calculation and include percentile ranking.
