Full Definition

A specialized imaging modality that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate high-resolution images of fetal anatomy, particularly soft tissues that may be poorly visualized on ultrasound. Fetal MRI is most valuable for evaluating the central nervous system, thoracic abnormalities, and complex malformations where ultrasound findings are inconclusive. The technique is safe during pregnancy and does not use ionizing radiation. Optimal imaging occurs after 20 weeks when fetal movements are less frequent and brain development is more advanced. The examination requires no maternal sedation but may need to be repeated if fetal movement degrades image quality. Specialized sequences can assess brain development, myelination, and detect subtle abnormalities not visible on ultrasound.
