hydrops fetalis

Abnormal accumulation of fluid in fetal tissues and body cavities.

Full Definition

Hydrops fetalis is a serious condition characterized by excessive fluid accumulation in fetal tissues and serous cavities, including ascites, pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and generalized skin edema. The condition can be immune-mediated (due to Rh incompatibility or other blood group incompatibilities) or non-immune (caused by cardiac abnormalities, infections, chromosomal disorders, or metabolic diseases). Non-immune hydrops is more common and has a poorer prognosis. Early diagnosis and treatment of underlying causes may improve outcomes.

Usage

Usage note: Two words, both lowercase unless beginning sentence. Serious condition requiring urgent evaluation.
