Full Definition

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) describes inadequate fetal growth, typically defined as estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age. IUGR can be symmetric (affecting all fetal parameters equally) or asymmetric (primarily affecting abdominal circumference). Causes include placental insufficiency, maternal hypertension, infection, or genetic abnormalities. The condition requires intensive monitoring and may necessitate early delivery.
