laser photocoagulation

Endoscopic laser treatment to ablate vascular connections in twin-twin transfusion syndrome.

Full Definition

A minimally invasive surgical procedure using laser energy delivered through a fetoscope to ablate abnormal vascular communications on the placental surface in cases of twin-twin transfusion syndrome. The procedure aims to separate the fetal circulations and halt the pathological blood flow between twins. Laser photocoagulation is performed under local anesthesia with ultrasound guidance, typically between 16-26 weeks of gestation. Success rates are good, but complications can include preterm rupture of membranes, infection, and incomplete ablation requiring repeat procedures.

Usage

Usage note: Specify 'fetoscopic' when used in full to distinguish from other forms of laser photocoagulation.
