nuchal translucency

First-trimester ultrasound measurement of fluid behind the fetal neck used for Down syndrome screening.

Full Definition

Nuchal translucency (NT) is a specialized ultrasound measurement taken between 11-14 weeks of pregnancy, assessing the thickness of fluid at the back of the fetal neck. Increased NT measurements (typically >3.5mm) are associated with higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities, particularly trisomy 21, 18, and 13. The measurement is combined with maternal age and biochemical markers to calculate overall risk scores in first-trimester screening programs.

Usage

Usage note: Always lowercase unless beginning sentence. Commonly abbreviated as NT in technical documentation.

In Context

  • "The nuchal translucency measurement of 4.2mm prompted referral for genetic counseling and diagnostic testing." — First-trimester screening report
  • "Normal nuchal translucency at 12 weeks provided reassurance regarding chromosomal risk." — Ultrasound findings
