polyhydramnios

Pronunciation: pol-ee-hahy-DRAM-nee-ohs

Excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid during pregnancy, often indicating fetal anomalies or maternal conditions.

Full Definition

Polyhydramnios is a condition characterized by an abnormally large volume of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus, typically defined as an amniotic fluid index (AFI) greater than 25 cm or a single deepest pocket greater than 8 cm. This condition can be associated with fetal gastrointestinal obstructions, neural tube defects, chromosomal abnormalities, or maternal diabetes. It may lead to complications such as preterm labor, placental abruption, or malpresentation. Diagnosis is made through ultrasound measurement, and management depends on the underlying cause and severity.

Usage

Usage note: Often confused with oligohydramnios; remember 'poly' means many/much (excess fluid).

In Context

  • "The ultrasound revealed severe polyhydramnios with an AFI of 32 cm." — Prenatal diagnosis report
  • "Maternal glucose screening was ordered to rule out diabetes as a cause of the polyhydramnios." — Clinical consultation note
