ventriculomegaly

Enlargement of the fetal brain ventricles detected on ultrasound examination.

Full Definition

Ventriculomegaly refers to dilatation of the lateral cerebral ventricles, typically defined as a measurement greater than 10mm at the atrium level on prenatal ultrasound. The condition is classified as mild (10-12mm), moderate (13-15mm), or severe (>15mm). Ventriculomegaly can be isolated or associated with other brain abnormalities, chromosomal disorders, or infections. Mild isolated ventriculomegaly often has a good prognosis, while severe forms may be associated with hydrocephalus and require neurosurgical intervention after birth.

Usage

Usage note: Specify severity (mild/moderate/severe) and whether isolated or associated with other abnormalities.

  • "Mild ventriculomegaly was detected at 20 weeks with bilateral lateral ventricles measuring 11mm." — Anomaly scan report
  • "Progressive ventriculomegaly raised concerns about developing hydrocephalus requiring postnatal neurosurgical evaluation." — Serial ultrasound findings
