Full Definition
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a developmental defect characterized by incomplete formation of the diaphragm, most commonly on the left side (Bochdalek hernia). Abdominal organs herniate into the thoracic cavity, causing pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension. Severe cases may benefit from fetal intervention such as tracheal occlusion to promote lung growth before birth.
