Drainage of fluid from the fetal pleural space using needle aspiration under ultrasound guidance.
Full Definition
A diagnostic and therapeutic procedure where fluid is aspirated from the fetal pleural cavity using a thin needle inserted percutaneously under continuous ultrasound guidance. This procedure is used to treat large pleural effusions that may cause pulmonary compression, mediastinal shift, or hydrops fetalis. The aspirated fluid can be analyzed for etiology, and the procedure may provide immediate relief from mass effect symptoms.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from therapeutic shunt placement which provides ongoing drainage.
