Full Definition

A procedure that creates a temporary or permanent opening into the cecum, the first part of the large intestine. Most commonly performed as a tube cecostomy for decompression of colonic obstruction or as an access route for antegrade colonic irrigation. The procedure can be performed open, laparoscopically, or percutaneously depending on patient condition and indication. Tube cecostomy is particularly useful in elderly or high-risk patients who are poor candidates for more extensive procedures.
