Presence of stones within the common bile duct causing potential obstruction.
Full Definition
A condition characterized by the presence of gallstones within the common bile duct, which may cause biliary obstruction, jaundice, and cholangitis. Stones may migrate from the gallbladder or form primarily within the duct system. Clinical presentation includes right upper quadrant pain, jaundice, and elevated liver enzymes. Diagnosis is confirmed through MRCP, ERCP, or endoscopic ultrasound. Treatment typically involves endoscopic stone removal via ERCP with sphincterotomy, sometimes followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy to prevent recurrence.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from cholelithiasis (gallbladder stones) and choledochocele.
