Surgical creation of an opening between the colon and abdominal wall for fecal diversion.
Full Definition
A surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall through which a portion of the colon is brought to the surface for waste elimination. May be temporary or permanent depending on underlying pathology and potential for restoration of bowel continuity. Common types include sigmoid colostomy, transverse colostomy, and descending colostomy, named for the anatomical location of the diverted bowel segment.
