Congenital obstruction of the duodenum, often presenting with the classic 'double bubble' sign on imaging.
Full Definition
A congenital anomaly resulting in complete obstruction of the duodenal lumen, most commonly occurring distal to the ampulla of Vater. Often associated with trisomy 21 and other congenital anomalies including cardiac defects and malrotation. The classic 'double bubble' sign on abdominal radiography represents gas in the stomach and proximal duodenum with absence of distal bowel gas. Surgical treatment involves duodenoduodenostomy or duodenojejunostomy, with attention to preserving the bile duct and avoiding injury to surrounding structures.

Usage note: Distinguish from duodenal stenosis, which allows partial passage of contrast or fluid.
