mesenteric ischemia
Inadequate blood supply to the small intestine due to arterial or venous compromise.
Full Definition
A serious condition resulting from reduced blood flow to the mesenteric vessels supplying the small bowel. Can be acute or chronic, with acute mesenteric ischemia representing a surgical emergency requiring immediate intervention. Causes include arterial embolism, thrombosis, or mesenteric venous thrombosis. Clinical presentation includes severe abdominal pain, often out of proportion to physical findings, and may progress to bowel necrosis requiring surgical resection.
