Full Definition

Peroral endoscopic myotomy is a natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery technique for treating achalasia and other esophageal motility disorders. The procedure involves creating a submucosal tunnel through the esophageal wall and dividing the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter endoscopically. POEM was first described by Haruhiro Inoue in 2008 and has gained popularity as an alternative to laparoscopic Heller myotomy.
