A complex disorder characterized by malabsorption, diarrhea, and nutritional deficiencies following loss of significant small bowel length or function. Typically occurs when less than 200cm of small intestine remains in adults or proportionally less in children. Management involves nutritional support, medications to slow transit and reduce secretions, and in severe cases, intestinal transplantation. The condition requires specialized multidisciplinary care including gastroenterology, nutrition, and often surgical management.
