Age-related Valvular Sclerosis

Progressive thickening and calcification of heart valve leaflets that occurs naturally with aging, typically affecting aortic and mitral valves without significant hemodynamic compromise.

Full Definition

Age-related valvular sclerosis refers to the progressive structural changes in heart valves that occur as part of normal aging, characterized by leaflet thickening, fibrosis, and calcification without significant restriction of leaflet motion or hemodynamic impairment. This process most commonly affects the aortic valve (aortic sclerosis) and mitral valve annulus, representing early stages of degenerative valve disease. Unlike stenosis, sclerosis maintains adequate valve opening and function while serving as a marker for increased cardiovascular risk and potential progression to significant valve disease. In geriatric cardiology, valvular sclerosis is extremely common, found in over 80% of adults over age 85. While generally benign initially, these changes may predispose to bacterial endocarditis and serve as a substrate for accelerated calcification in the presence of other risk factors such as chronic kidney disease or diabetes.
