Bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome, also known as tachy-brady syndrome, is a manifestation of sick sinus syndrome where patients experience alternating episodes of bradycardia and tachyarrhythmias, typically atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. This condition is particularly common in elderly patients due to age-related degeneration of the cardiac conduction system. Management is challenging as treatments for bradycardia may worsen tachycardia and vice versa. Pacemaker implantation is often required to allow safe use of rate-controlling medications for the tachyarrhythmic episodes. The syndrome significantly impacts quality of life due to symptoms ranging from fatigue and dizziness to palpitations and syncope.
