Full Definition

Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is a degenerative process involving calcium deposition in the fibrous ring supporting the mitral valve. This condition is particularly prevalent in elderly patients and can lead to mitral stenosis or regurgitation. MAC is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and may complicate cardiac interventions. In severe cases, it can extend into the conduction system, causing heart block, or create a substrate for infective endocarditis. The condition is often detected incidentally on echocardiography and may influence surgical planning in elderly patients requiring cardiac procedures.
