Orthostatic Hypotension

A sustained decrease in blood pressure upon standing, commonly affecting elderly cardiac patients and influencing medication management.

Full Definition

Orthostatic hypotension is defined as a sustained reduction of systolic blood pressure of at least 20 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of at least 10 mmHg within three minutes of standing. In geriatric cardiology, this condition is prevalent due to age-related autonomic dysfunction, dehydration, and cardiovascular medications. Orthostatic hypotension significantly impacts medication titration decisions, particularly for antihypertensive and heart failure medications. The condition increases fall risk and may limit aggressive treatment of cardiovascular conditions in elderly patients.
