Vasodepressor Response

A physiological reaction involving peripheral vasodilation and hypotension, commonly seen during tilt table testing in elderly patients with syncope.

Vasodepressor response refers to a specific hemodynamic pattern characterized by significant peripheral vasodilation leading to hypotension without significant bradycardia. This response is frequently observed during tilt table testing or carotid sinus massage in elderly patients being evaluated for syncope. In the context of geriatric cardiology, vasodepressor response represents one component of neurocardiogenic syncope and may be more prevalent in older adults due to age-related changes in autonomic function and vascular compliance. Unlike cardioinhibitory responses that primarily involve bradycardia, vasodepressor responses maintain heart rate while blood pressure drops precipitously, often requiring different therapeutic approaches including volume expansion and vasoconstrictor medications.
